The Green Park
If you are visiting London then one of the sights that you must see is The
Green Park. It is one of most sought after locations in London by the tourists.
It is among the official parks of London. The park covers a huge area of
approximately 53 acres and it lies between Hyde's Park and St. James Park.
The reason why these parks are so famous is because these parks together with
the gardens that belong to the Buckingham palace form an unbroken stretch of
open land. Such a vast expanse of open land is rarely seen anywhere in the
world. This vast expanse attributes to the many rare species of flora that are
found in the park. Also the vast lakes that are in these parks contribute to
the attraction of the tourists and there are many activities like boating etc.
that are carried out in the park. Due to the open grounds these parks play a
significant role in the wind pattern as well as the weather of the city. Also
the open ground is known to be a venue for many demonstrations, marches as well
as rock concerts. Even though the neighboring parks all have lakes The Green
Park does not have a lake. Therefore if you are looking for some boating fun
then you should probably try the other parks. This park however has the Canada
memorial situated which is a tourist attraction.
To the north of this park is Piccadilly which has The Green park tube station.
This tube station is a main interchange point between the stations and is quite
busy most of the times. The tube station is well connected with other zones in
the city.
The history of The Green Park is quite unique. It was said to be the burial
grounds from leapers. The hospital at St. James buried all their patients who
they could not save here. The park was first said to have been enclosed by
Henry VIII. In the year of 1688, an area of the park that was known as the sand
pit field was surrendered by the Poulteney family to King Charles II. He turned
a bulk of this land into a royal park. He made major changes in the structure
of the park which included the laying of the main walks of the park as well as
building an ice house for him which would supply him with cool drinks whenever
he took walks there in summer. During this time the park was on the outskirts
of London and it soon became a haunt of thieves and robbers. Also this place
was popular for Balloon attempts and public fireworks display.
Also The Green Park has played host for many notorious duels. Today the park
consists of meadows that are entirely wooded. There are many tunnels that run
along the east side of the park that run towards the south. These were said to
be dug during the Second World War and these are now converted into government
offices.
